Join us to discover the hidden wonders of Livorno’s historic springs on an enchanting and history-rich trek. Our journey takes place within the Parco dei Monti Livornesi, a network of trails weaving through lush forests, spring waters, and lively streams, like the Caput Morrae. This stream, reaching the Cisternino and Cisternone, has quenched the thirst of Livorno’s inhabitants from 1816 until the early 20th century.
We will walk through the architectural marvels of the Acquedotto Leopoldino, perfectly integrated with the surrounding nature: smooth sandstone arches, purification basins, tunnels, and staircases of a 19th-century masterpiece stretching 17 km, designed by architect Poccianti. Initiated under Ferdinand III of Lorraine and completed by Leopold II, this aqueduct stands as a historical example of the engineering of its time. Following its path, we will head back towards Valle Benedetta via the 00 trail in La Focerella locality, passing by the quarries of Monte Maggiore where the green serpentine rocks, which have marked the ancient geological history of the area, were extracted. We will finally conclude our excursion with a pleasant stop at the trattoria in the Valle Benedetta, where we can enjoy a snack and admire the beautiful view of the sea and the city of Livorno.
