Livorno / What to do and see / The Church of Saints Cosma and Damiano
A small and precious place of worship perched on Nugola
The Church of Saints Cosma and Damiano, built at the beginning of the 17th century, stands on a small hill in the village of Nugola, a few kilometers from Collesalvetti. Almost guarding the surrounding landscape, it is reached by a staircase that leads directly to its characteristic facade. As soon as you cross the threshold, the interior of the church reveals itself in all its splendor.
The structure, with a Latin cross plan, develops in a single nave, leading the faithful in a linear and meditative path towards the altar. Its interior is embellished with predominantly nineteenth-century furnishings, including altars, confessionals, and baptismal fonts that enrich the aesthetic image of the church. One of the most fascinating aspects is the apse area, elegantly delimited by marble balustrades, which conceals a small room with a particular history: here, the company of St. John the Baptist used to gather in the past.
However, it is in the restoration of the chapel dedicated to the Madonna that the Church of Saints Cosma and Damiano reveals one of its most precious treasures: two extraordinary frescoed figures depicting the cardinal virtues of Justice and Fortitude. These representations, rich in detail and symbolism, hidden for centuries under layers of lime and forgotten by time, have been brought to light thanks to careful and respectful restoration.
